HOW TO CARVE A PUMPKIN

A classic Halloween activity, pumpkin carving is a great way to celebrate the season and unleash your creativity. Whether you want to try a traditional jack-o-lantern or a unique design of your own, follow these simple steps to learn how to carve a pumpkin.

1. Plan before you buy

Think of what you want to carve and pick a pumpkin to suit. Smaller pumpkins are great for simple lanterns, but opt for a bigger pumpkin for more intricate designs or lettering.

2. Prep, prep, prep

While it can be tempting to let the kids loose on the pumpkins straight away, it's more fun if an adult preps them ahead of time.

  • Use a large knife to cut off the top of each pumpkin, leaving a notch in one side of the round so it goes back on top easily.
  • Then, use a large spoon to scoop out the seeds and stringy pulp from inside the pumpkin. Discard or keep to make our delicious Pumpkin Spice Creamers below!
  • Pat the inside of the pumpkin dry, ready for carving.

3. Draw your pattern

Before you get stuck in, decide what you want to carve and draw it first, either straight on the pumpkin or a piece of paper you can tape to your pumpkin as a guide.

4. Let the fun begin

Now it's time to get carving! Make sure children are supervised at all times while doing this and don't panic if you make a mistake. Grab a toothpick and reattach any stray pieces!
